Misai Kucing is a medicinal herb found mainly throughout South East Asia and tropical Australia. The flowers have fine filaments that resembles cat’s whiskers, hence its Malay name, Misai Kuching (Cat’s whiskers).
In the wild, the plant can be seen growing at fringes of the jungle, in wastelands and along roadsides. The two general species, Orthosiphon stamineus “purple” and Orthosiphon stamineus “white” are traditionally used to treat diabetes, kidney and urinary disorders, high blood pressure and bone or muscular pain.
Pharmaceutical research on Misai Kucing had begun since 1970′s in Germany and USA regarding its essential oil, active chemicals, and benefits for health. Recently, a group of researchers from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University Sains Malaysia succeeded in producing standardised misai kucing herbal extract for the treatment of cancer. The team, headed by lecturer Dr. Amin Malik Shah Abdul Majid, found that misai kucing, has high antioxidant content that could prevent and control the growth of cancer cells.
Canssufive is an extract from misai kucing having high anti-oxidant content. Canssufive prevents the cancer cells from spreading to tissues and other organs by retarding the growth of blood vessels to the tumour cells which was proven by studies carried out on cell cultures and animals. The team is planning to do a clinical study on the effectiveness of canssufive on humans by the end of this year. To date, canssufive tablets are not yet available in the market.
